The Ethnographical Museum in Piatra-Neamţ
Created in 1960, this museum is located in the headmaster’s house of the former primary school that was opened in the current Art Gallery. The building, with its picturesque architecture, erected in 1931, always proves to be too small for the volume of art works it houses. As a rule, the museum displays in the four rooms of the house aspects of a traditional dwelling on the Bistriţa Valley, folk dress, the main occupations and crafts in the sub-Carpathian region of Moldova, and farming activities.
In the mountain area of the county, the most common type of dwelling until late nineteenth century included a room and a porch; in the interior reconstructed here you will find the benches, the bed, the stove, many wool rugs (bed cover or to hang on the walls), the dowry chest. The various pieces of folk dress, in sober colours and harmonious tones, as well as the wide range of objects and tools illustrating the main occupations (felling trees, rafting timber down the river, etc.), crafts and farming works will complete your time-journey.
