Pângăraţi Monastery is situated in Neamt County, in a dream place, surrounded by forests adorned by conifers and deciduous trees, on the left bank of the creek Pângăraţi at about 13 km from Piatra Neamt, following DN15 (Piatra Neamt-Bicaz) to right, the road is paved and passes in front of Hydroelectric plant Stejaru.
The name of the monastery comes from the name of a hermit who lived in the years of the fifteenth century right near the creek which he named, by the name of Pangratie. Hearing the true-believer ruler Stephen the Great of the Pious need, and acknowledging that he has no church where to ray with his disciples, in the year 1461 gave him money and help to build up a small wooden church, dedicated to Holy Great Martyr Demetrios Rises of Chrism. In 1476 the Turks invaded Moldavia and monks have taken the wandering path through the mountains. Pângăraţi monastery was called until the year 1508 Simeon Hermitage. The church of Pângăraţi Monastery was built in 1560 by Lapusneanu (1562-1561; 1564-1568) who built the monastery Bell Tower and he appropriated the monastery. The next milestone in the development of construction assembly from the heart of the Pângăraţi Monastery was during the reign of Prince Vasile Lupu (1634-1653), when in the year 1642, there have been significant improvements in Pângăraţi who renewed the church. The current form of the monastery is due to vigorous activity of the Arhim Abbot. Varnava (1833-1859), he is the founder of the village giving Pângăraţi name after the name of the monastery in 1872. At the insistence of the Ministry of Interior in the buildings of the monastery was founded a prison. During its operation, occurs the porch construction on the north side of the monument church, by inmates. Since 1960, the Pângăraţi monastery was given to the Research Station Biological, Geographic – Stejaru. Then have been handed over to the Metropolia the archive of the Monastery and 4 big bags of books written in Cyrillic. By the decision of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church on 23 May 1991 was established the Monastery Pângăraţi, a monk monastery. Through the modernization works started here from June 1st 1996 may be seen three centuries pleasantly combined: XV, XVII century and new twenty-first century, with the construction of the new church with a new yard and access alley. The church has a unique architecture among all the monasteries of Moldova, because are included in the same building two churches superimposed. The way in which the manufacturer has managed to build the monastery, led to the creation of a single element, giving the church externally, a very special dimension, contrasting with the modest decor which it enjoys. Pangarati Monastery is on the map of the Neamt County one of the most important tourist attractions.
