The Scientific Reservation Ocolasul Mare
Ceahlau National Park was organized in 1955 as a protected area and its present days boundaries were marked in 2003. The maximum altitude on Ceahlau Mountain is on Ocolasul Mare Peak at 1907 m. The most visited and important peak of the mountain is Toaca Peak of 1904 m (mainly because Ocolasul Mare Peak is closed for the public). “Ocolasul Mare” Reservation has a surface of 186 ha.
This reservation was created in 1998 and the access to the peak was restricted. In this reservation there are 1100 species of flowers and 90 species of birds and protected animals. Among the flora specimens that are protected by law there is also the famous Edelweiss.
Among the animal species that are protected and that are part of the reservation there are: the toad (green or gray), the black eagle, the chamois, the bear, the deer, the mountain rooster and few others.
