Short description

Founded in 1980, the Ethnography Museum hosts an impressive collection of ethnographic objects and traditional art from the Neamt area which illustrates the occupations, customs and clothing but also traditional wood architecture.

The first ethnographic collection of the museum is from 1960 and it is composed from approximately 1,000 pieces. Today, the main collection of the museum offers elements of the traditional house of the Romanian peasant from the Bistrita Valley, the folk costume from this area and also the main handicrafts (weaving, woodworking) from the sub-Carpathian region of Moldavia – Romania.

Due to the mountain relief true architecture of wood was found in the construction used on Bistrita Valley, the area from Roman, or Humulesti Bargauani. In the museum, we can admire objects of massive furniture (the bed, the table), rich fabrics of wool, the case of dowry, the folk suit of the Romanian.

The main occupations of the people of this area have been breeding, agriculture and wood processing. By the end of XIX century the main means of transport for wood products and the people on the Bistrita Valley was the raft – here was recorded the largest and most organized development of this kind of transport from the entire country.
