Traditions and Customs displayed in the Ethnographic Museums from Neamt County
Neamt County has a wealthy heritage of folk customs, traditions and local artisans. Here, the folk art is well preserved and promoted by the local artisans that transmit their knowledge to the young generation. An important role in the conservation of these traditions is played by the ethnographic museums that exhibit beautiful collections of traditional objects from Neamt region.

The Ethnography Museum of Piatra Neamt: The first ethnographic collection of the museum is from 1960 and it’s composed from approximately 1,000 pieces. Today, the main collection of the museum offers elements of the traditional house of the Romanian peasant from Bistrita Valley, folk costumes from this area and also the main handicrafts (weaving, woodworking) from the sub-Carpathian region of Moldavia – Romania.
The History and Ethnography Museum of Targu Neamt: The today’s organizational form of the exhibition was established in 1986-1987 when the main exhibition of the museum was completely reorganized. Here we can find a summary of the medieval history of the town Targu Neamt as well the handcrafts from Neamt area. In a court of the museum we can see some traditional machines for processing fruits, seeds, wood and wool.
The Museum of History and Ethnography Bicaz: The building was made at the beginning of the XX century and it’s part of the national list of architectural monuments. The permanent exhibition of the museum is organized on three main spaces which illustrate the history of Bistrita Valley and also the 102 paintings donated to Bicaz by the painter Iulia Halaucescu.
The Collection of Ethnography and Folk Art from Bicazu Ardelean: This museum is located in the school building from the village Telec. The collection was put together by Professor Barna Augustin Marcian and his wife Elena Barna. The objects represent an image of the customs and traditions from Bicaz valley.
The Museum from Vanatori commune: The Museum from Vanatori commune – Neamt County was organized in the building where there was the old school from the village. The objects presented in the museum represent a glimpse of the past, evidence of our cultural and historical heritage.
The Museum Neculai Popa from Tarpesti: Neculai Popa is an exquisite artist and a passionate collector of traditional art and folk objects. The museum was founded in the 70’s in his house. What you can see today, if you go there is one of the most interesting museums from Romania. Located in Tarpesti, Petricani village(near Targu Neamt), the museum is part of an itinerary of those that also visit Neamt Fortress, Neamt Monastery, the Museum Mihail Sadoveanu and the Memorial House Ion Creanga.
Vasile Gaman Museum from Vanatori Neamt: The building of the museum is a traditional house and the permanent collection that is exposed here covers about 3,000 pieces collected or built over time. The entrance gate from the museum is a national monument and it has sculpted in wood the faces of Burebista, Decebal, Traian, Stefan cel Mare, Dragos-Voda and Mihai Viteazul on the map of Romania.
