Ceahlău – The Olympus of Moldova and the Holy Mountain of Neamț

Towering over the surrounding mountains and standing relatively isolated, Ceahlău Mountain—also known as the Olympus of Moldova—can be your dream escape into a breathtaking natural setting with deep forests, juniper groves, and alpine meadows, like a grand open-air museum.
Ceahlău, the mountain of shepherds and prayer, is the only mountain with a religious celebration on August 6th. It is also the only place in the world where two unique phenomena occur: The Pyramid Shadow and The Sky Path.
Each year, over 100,000 tourists visit Ceahlău to experience its spectacular mountain trails.

The Famous Stairway on Toaca Peak

With its breathtaking views and stunning landscapes, this stairway with over 500 steps has become widely known, especially online. It is the only one in Romania located at such an altitude.
At the very top, visitors are rewarded with a unique panorama—an indescribable, awe-inspiring view.

Durău Mountain Resort and Durău Park Recreation Area

Located at an altitude of 800 meters in the Ceahlău Massif, this resort offers many attractions for tourists.

  • In winter, visitors can enjoy skiing.
  • In summer, a fun park awaits guests of all ages, featuring tubing, a summer sled, a mountain carousel, ski lifts, a children’s playground, bike trails, escalators, and trampolines.

Izvorul Muntelui Lake and Bicaz Dam

Located at the foot of Ceahlău Massif, Izvorul Muntelui Lake is the largest in the region, also known as “the sea among the mountains” (35 km in length).
It is the only lake in Romania where Navy Day is traditionally celebrated. In 2000, it was declared a natural aquatic reserve and is also a magnificent archaeological site with discoveries dating back to the Eneolithic era.
The lake was formed following the construction of Bicaz Dam (1950-1960), an artificial giant 127 meters high and 435 meters long, built by a workforce of 10,000 to 15,000 people, with 22 villages relocated for the project.

Piatra Neamț – Home to the Most Important Eneolithic Art Collection in Southeastern Europe

A land of spiritual and traditional symbols, a sacred space of the ancient Dacians, and a cradle of Romanian ethnogenesis, Neamț is deeply rooted in one of Europe’s most studied prehistoric civilizations: the Precucuteni-Cucuteni-Tripolye Cultural Complex.
The painted Cucuteni pottery is considered unique in the world.

Bicaz Gorges – The Raw and Untamed Beauty of the Eastern Carpathians

With their wild, almost fairy-tale-like appearance, Bicaz Gorges make you feel like part of an epic adventure.
A paradise for climbers and photographers, these rock formations rise over 300 meters high, carved by the Bicaz River. Behind the towering limestone walls lie spectacular caves and deep chasms, with 18 mountain trails crossing this natural wonder.

Șugău Gorges and Romania’s Longest Via Ferrata Route

Near Bicaz Gorges, Șugău Gorges is one of the most valuable protected areas in the Carpathians and Europe.
Here, you will find “Astragalus”, the longest Via Ferrata route in Romania, measuring 700 meters in length, with five different ascent options of varying difficulty.

The “Athos of Romania” – The Monastic Heritage of Neamț

Neamț has the highest number of monasteries in Romania, some of which are known both nationally and internationally.
These monastic settlements, located within the Vânători-Neamț Natural Park, are part of a 30,000-hectare natural area rich in over a quarter of Romania’s plant species.
The Romsilva – Vânători-Neamț Natural Park was added to UNESCO’s Tentative List in 2021.

The Land of the Bison – The Greenest Destination in Romania

Since 2017, Ținutul Zimbrului (The Land of the Bison) has been included in the Top 100 Sustainable Destinations Worldwide, making it Romania’s only destination on this prestigious list.
In this breathtaking natural setting, the European bison once again roams freely, as it did over 150 years ago in Neamț’s forests.
For those seeking unique experiences, visitors can take part in ranger-led bison safaris in the heart of the reservation.
The region also offers cultural and traditional events, eco-friendly brunches with local products, and artisan workshops.

Neamț Fortress – A Medieval Treasure

First mentioned in 1395, Neamț Fortress is a historic jewel.

It flourished under the reign of Stephen the Great (1457–1504), who strengthened and elevated its walls. Over the centuries, it withstood numerous sieges, standing as a symbol of Moldavian resilience.
Each July, the fortress comes to life with the “Neamț Fortress Days” Medieval Festival, featuring:

  • Medieval music and dance
  • Knightly combat demonstrations
  • Parades with noblemen and ladies
  • Traditional crafts and weaponry workshops

Cuejdel Lake – The Hidden Gem of the Stânișoara Mountains

Also called the “Cross Lake”, Cuejdel is one of Romania’s largest natural dam lakes and was declared a natural reserve in 2004.
It is one of the most photogenic landscapes in Neamț, with its eerie “drowned forest” of tree trunks emerging from the water.
Surrounded by forests, it is a breathtaking oasis of wilderness, offering ever-changing views throughout the seasons.
