Neamț County: the 4th position in the category “Local intangible tourism and patrimony”

Among the European Destinations of Excellence, Neamț County is recognized for the numerous monasteries, which are important due to their special architecture and connection with some of the most significant moments in the area’s history and also for the museums and memorial houses of Romanian writers (Ion Creangă Memorial House impresses thanks to the preservation of the traditional rural architecture of the 19th century).

Among the monasteries, we cannot fail to mention the oldest one, the Neamț Monastery, also called the “Jerusalem of the Romanian Orthodoxy in Moldavia” of the 14th century, then Secu, Sihăstria, Agapia (all three built in the 17th century and later extended) and Văratec (the 18th century).

Traditional customs and folklore (more precisely the music, costumes and dances) are best represented in Târpești, where unique masks of high artistic value are made. In addition to all of these is the medieval Neamț Fortress, first mentioned in the 14th century.

In Piatra Neamț, at the Cucuteni Neolithic Art Museum, the most important collection of Neolithic art in the Southeast Europe is on display. This is where visitors can admire three-dimensional artefacts and photo documentary materials, from all stages and phases of the evolution of the Cucuteni-Trypillia civilization, from its entire spreading area.

Neamț County: the 4th position in the category “Local tourism and gastronomy”

The Neamț gastronomy impresses by its variety and diverse tastes and flavors.

In the summer months, you can chill out with a syrup made from fir buds, picked from the local conifer forests, and enjoy a delicious smoked trout along with a glass of wine. The cheese-based products made in the mountain sheepfolds are also very tasty. A good plum brandy or a juicy cherry brandy is a great starter before a copious meal.

During the holidays, traditional dishes are at their highest demand. Stuffed cabbage rolls, hunter’s or pork appetizers, German sausage or sausage, head cheese, pork Moldavian chunks, polenta, eggs, sheep cheese, can be served almost everywhere you go in Neamț. The Moldavian sour soups are also one of a kind.

In Neamț, tourists are impressed by the beautiful places and kind people, who have a great sense of humor, speak and act humbly. Housewives will offer the Moldavian pork stew and the “julfa”, a delicatessen of fine pastry sheets stuffed with crushed hemp seeds, also known as “Jesus’ Diapers”.

Cycling lovers find in Neamț County tempting and generous offers for long walks or mountain tournaments. The landscapes along these routes are fascinating because of their beauty and picturesque scenery, on the edge of lakes or rivers, on forest roads or on mountain paths.

Neamț County: the 3rd position in the category “Local tourism and protected areas – Vânători-Neamţ Nature Park”

It is the only place in Europe where the bisons can be seen, in the same area, in captivity, in conditions of semi-freedom and roaming free in the wilderness. Since 2012, several bisons have been living freely in the forest area of the park, being monitored by radio stations and GPS. The park administration has developed a safari program that allows tourists to see the bisons in their natural habitat. There is also a Bison museum inside the Visiting Centre and two routes dedicated to the European Bisons in the enclosed area nearby the Visiting Center.

The Park area is also renown for the Orthodox monasteries and hermitages. There are around 40 churches, hermitages and monasteries, from which 16 are nationally known.

As for the cultural significance, famous poets, novelists and painters lived and created their masterpieces in this wonderful region: Eminescu, Vlahuță, Sadoveanu, Creangă, Grigorescu. The Neamț Fortress is one of the most famous historical attractions in Romania.
