Pilgrimage to the Archbisphoric Church in Roman
Commissioned by Petru Rareş and his son Ilaş, the complex is enlisted as a monument of religious architecture. In its five-century-old history is has been established as an important cultural centre of the area. The ornamentation of the facades was modified in the 17th century. The doors and windows mostly keep the Gothic frames, while the main door frame was designed in Renaissance style, in the form of a curved arch. The iconostasis, executed at the beginning of the 19th century, impresses with its rich sculptural motifs. The unique icon of Moldavia’ patron saint, Parascheva the Pious, and the extremely beautiful interior mural painting are among its main attractions. The belfry is also monumental – its five storeys house an equally impressive library. Along with the cathedral, the monastic ensemble includes a chapel, cells for the monks, buildings for the diocesan administration and the marvellous Archbishop’s Palace, built in 1870.
