Representative for Romania and a true image, at a smaller scale, of the country, if we refer to the outline of the map and the balanced distribution of relief forms, Neamț County is the place where there are mountains, hills, plains, waters, meadows, the spectacular Bicaz Gorges, the famous Bison Land, caves and forests and also a miniature sea -“the Lake Izvorul Muntelui”.

The county’s monography issued in 1995 states the following: “Neamț County was undeniably the most frequently mentioned land in the creative writings depicted by Romanian or foreign authors. For all these and many more reasons, Neamţ County is the most common Romanian land in pages of literature. Neither the Balkan Bucharest, nor Târgovişte -the old capital of the Wallachian country-, nor even Alba-Iulia -citadel of great historical significance-, did not inspire and fascinate as the Neamţ County did, throughout time.” (County of Neamț — Monography, Neamț County Council)
Neamţ – the charming and magical county. The history of Neamț County as shown in literature pages
Thus, Neamț County becomes a living history of Romanian literature, with works by representative authors like Dimitrie Cantemir, Gheorghe Asachi, Costache Negruzzi, Alecu Russo, Alexandru Vlahuţă, Mihai Eminescu, Ion Creangă, Gabaret Ibrăileanu, Calistrat Hogaş, George Coşbuc and Mihail Sadoveanu. All of them have mastered the beauty of these lands, the spectacular nature, the hospitality and warmheartedness of the people living in Neamţ, in literary works of great value: “Memories from childhood”, “The hatchet”, “On mountain roads” or “Adela”. Not to mention the Western authors such as Alexandre Dumas or Jules Verne, whose writings make the “bibliography” grow substantially at the level of an impressive, universal library. (County of Neamț — Monography, Neamț County Council)
But what are the reasons of such a large number of literature writings and statements regarding Neamț County and where exactly is the charm and magic of this land derived from? There are undoubtedly a multitude of answers, because here you can find valuable artistic, ethnographic and architectural collections and also a rich monastic life. Therefore, in Neamț, more than anywhere else in the country, the wildness of the mountains, the thickness of the forests, the tranquility of the meadows and the beauty of the valleys always shelter monastic settlements where the faith in God has never faded. The oldest such settlements in Moldavia is Neamț Monastery dating from 1210 and also called ”the Jerusalem of Romanian Orthodoxy”.
