Horăicioara Monastery – Cristian VIDRAŞCU Photography
Isolated in the heart of the mountains, far away from the noisy world, Horăicioara Monastery is located in the crack of a cliff at an altitude of 900 m, only 1 km away from Horaita Monastery. Horăicioara Monastery „is a eagle’s nest hanging in the crack of an air cliff” as the famous Romanian writer Calistrat Hogaș recalled.
You can arrive here either by walking on foot from Horaiţa Monastery, or by car. From DN 15C (Piatra Neamţ – Târgu Neamţ) in Dobreni commune you turn left and then go about 15 km on the road 156A, passing through the villages Negreşti and Poiana. After you reach Horaiţa Monastery there is a side road that goes to the hermitage.
Horăicioara Hermitage or Horaiţa Veche (Old Horaiţa) was built in the second half of the XV century. In the stone church dating back from 1868, the pilgrims can find the Holy Icon of Virgin Mary, which is believed to have miraculous powers. The convent`s celebration is held every year on „Izvorul Tămăduirii” (The Healing Spring Day), the first Friday, after Easter.
Along with Horaiţa Monastery, Horăicioara Monastery continues the tradition of the Orthodox Church. Pilgrims in search for a place to meditate, to pray or simply a place where they can find tranquility, can come and spend a few days in this beautiful natural setting.
