Bison Safari. Walking the trails of the bisons in Vânători Neamţ Natural Park – a world-renowned touristic destination
Tourists interested in meeting the largest herbivor in Europe, living in similar conditions to those living in the wild, and studying the animals in their natural habitat can make an appointment at Vânători Neamţ Natural Park Administration Centre. Nowadays, the Park is the only place in Romania where tourists can visit the bison in three habitat types: inside “Dragoş Vodă” Carpathian Wildlife and Bisons Reserve, in semi-freedom, in the acclimatization enclosure at the „Bisons Management Centre” and in freedom, in the forests of the communes Agapia, Bălţăteşti, Brusturi, Crăcăoani, Vânători Neamţ, Răuceşti, Pipirig, Hangu till Ceahlău.

The acclimatization enclosure for bisons, which spreads on a total surface of about 445 acre, is a mosaic of forest and open areas, where various observation facilities for visitors (pavilions, suspended walkway, thematic route, observatories) are established. In addition to the bisons, the visitors can also observe, in their natural habitats, specimens of deer, wild boar, fox, squirrel, wild cat, badger, avifauna.
“The Land of the Bison” in Neamţ, internationally renowned destination, has been included in Top 100 Sustainable Destinations worldwide, a global contest organized by Green Destinations in partnership with other 20 international organizations working in the field of sustainable tourism.
Eversince Top 100 Sustainable Destinations Worldwide competition has been launched, in the last four years, in 2018 “The Land of the Bison” was nominated for the second time, the first nomination for the same destination in Romania dating from 2017.

The inclusion of “The Land of the Bison” in Green Destinations top was based on well established criteria such as nature protection, landscape management, preservation of cultural heritage, people involved in tourism and the promotion of local brands. Representatives of the winning destinations will be awarded on the 6th of March at ITB Berlin. “Top 100 initiative aims to recognize and promote tourist destinations where hard work has been conducted by dedicated professionals in order to make a difference and assure the sustainable development of such areas. However, no destination is fully sustainable. All the selected destinations still have problems to solve”, experts said.

“The Land of the Bison” as described by the foreign experts, prior to its inclusion in Top 100 Sustainable Destinations, is situated in the ”spiritual heart” of Romania, a renowned area for the sixteen orthodox monasteries scattered in a beautiful forestry landscape. Stunning wildlife, including the great predators of the Carpathians and the European bison, is present in the area. There are also many historical places and museums that represent important tourist attractions. “Taking into account the characteristics of the area, ”The Land of the Bison” will become a preferred location for practicing sustainable tourism based on protecting and improving the visivbility of the local natural, cultural and spiritual heritage, and on the uniform disttribution in space of the tourist intensity, mostly by promoting the indissoluble link between nature and spirituality. The area was certified by the National Tourism Agency for 2016-2019 “.
