Cheile Bicazului-Hăşmaş National Park, from Neamț County
Cheile Bicazului-Hăşmaş National Park
Created in 2000, covering some 6,575 hectares in two counties, i.e., Neamţ and Harghita, the landscape of this Park is extremely varied. Visitors can find here an ample and spectacular system of gorges, caves, and sinkholes (i.e., 88 such “sinkholes”), steep slopes and waterfalls as well as a picturesque naturally dammed lake called Lacul Roşu. Equally varied is the plant and animal life, with some rare and protected species.
Approaching the area from Bicaz, the wild view of Şugău Gorges welcome the visitors. In this genuine “outdoor museum”, one can find many treasures such as the 150m-long Munticelu cave and the narrowest gorges in the country, with a mere 3-4m opening. Visitors are then amazed and overwhelmed by the breathtaking splendour of the Bicaz Gorges, the most spectacular ones in Romania. Eyes chase hungrily for Peştera Cascadei, the steep rocky walls of Gâtul Iadului, majestic peaks such as Piatra Altarului, the foamy waters of River Bicaz, and the winding road lace. Rock climbing is a common pursuit on the marked treks up some cliffs.
