Văleni Wooden church
At Văleni are one of the oldest and durable wooden churches in Moldova, built in the middle of dense forest, during the reign of Petru Rares, in the year 1538. It was rebuilt by Lapusneanu and then by Ieremia Movilă. Originally belonging to Văleni Hermitage, hermitage which later became a convent, akin to Moldovița and Sucevița, the church was built of oak on a stone foundation,wuth the roof from shingle as a giant umbrella that protects from weather this monument of Moldavian architecture. When you step into it, is like stepping into a museum that presents an exceptional pictorial treasure. Here was a school – iconographic painting workshop. The proof are remaining icons of the greatest value, which are distinguished by the force of expression and chromaticism specifically, recognized by their plastic qualities and after the embossed border wich are individualizing them. Over 100 icons coming from here, values of national heritage, are in Agapia, Varatec, Neamt and Bistrita monasteries museums, knowing more than 150 icons whose origin refers to Văleni, not counting those scattered in private collections. Here are a few reasons why the oldest wooden church in Neamt County, now a parish church, is worth a visit.
