The religious settlement from Durau
In a place of unique beauty, at the foot of the holy mountain Ceahlau you’ll find the religious settlement from Durau. The name of Durau comes from one of the three creeks that surrounds the place.
About this place located at the foot of Ceahlau Mountain there are writings from 1600 when here was a hermitage lead by the nun Mariana, which also was the granddaughter of Vasile Lupu. In time many churches were built here but the one that can be visited today was raised in 1830. The church impresses through the architecture specific to the Moldova region in the XIX century. Any pilgrim that visits the place will have the chance to see the interior painting made by N. Tonitza and his apprentices.
Among the old constructions there is also the house of Veniamin Costache and the old wood bell tower that dates from the XVIII century and that also reminds of the old wood church of Durau Hermitage. The settlement also hosts the “Lumen Dei” workshop where nuns are skilled in the art of glass and wood icon painting.
Starting with 1991 the monastery became once again a nun monastery and represents a center of spirituality. Here there is also “St Daniil Sihastrul” Cultural and Religious Center. Tourists and pilgrims that come to Durau can also visit the monastery from the top of Ceahlau Mountain.
