The interior of the main church from Varatec
Varatec Monastery is one the biggest and most visited nun monastery from Neamt County. The big church of the monastery impresses through the beautiful interior and the original paintings that are still kept until this day.
In the porch of the church there is a big painting of Heaven and Hell that surrounds the stone inscription from where we find the date when the church was built. The narthex is small and decorated with two large icons of Jesus and Mary Mother of Go with Child.
The nave consists of a big room where visitors can admire the veil carved in wood and covered with gold foil. It was made in 1815 by the artist Constantin Zugravul. Some of the most beautiful icons are Jesus Christ painted by Nicolae Grigorescu and Mother Mary the Emperor. The painting of the church was made in 1841 and restored in 1882 by local artists, T. Ioan and D. Iliescu.
In the narthex there is also the tomb of St Iosif, the first builder of the settlement. Near his tomb there is a small coffin with more holly relics that protect the church.
