Hiking on Asau Peak near Damuc
The starting point of this hiking route is in Damuc Commune, at the stone church in Huisurez Village. It’s best to leave your car at the school in Damuc, which will also be the finishing point of the route. From there you go on foot on the communal road, until on your left you see a stone church located on a hill.
From here you’ll have to seek an access point to the hill from your left. The first part of the route will challenge your conditioning. To reach Asau Peak will require climbing roughly 2 hours.
Sometimes the slope becomes abrupt but each step carries you higher and higher, above the entire valley. The view becomes spectacular: mountains that surround the valley are overwhelming. The stone church is now a small white dot at the base of the mountain. While we continue to go up, we come across haystacks in the middle of green planes.
Check the Google Map of the route (view it as Terrain and/or Satellite)
Once we are on top, at more than 1300 m, in front of our eyes we see the whole spectacle of nature: Cheile Bicazului – Hasmasu Park, Ceahlau Mountain, Heghes Peak, Ivanes Peak, Hasmasul Mare Peak, Suhard, Munticelu, the stone Piatra Singuratica, just to name a few.
From here the route becomes easier: the trail takes us on the ridge, to the left and turns us back to Damuc. At some point there is a small construction: it’s a bell and a small troita (troita is a small construction with a cross). On a board there are listed the names of the people that helped built this small religious facility.
We look with admiration to the local’s endeavor. We continue our hike through haystacks and we notice that on top of the mountain the snowdrops are rising. As we go down we start to see flowers like “ciubotica cucului”. With the wind blowing in our face, a young deer barely sees us and runs into the forest.
We continue the road, mesmerized by what we see to our left and right. The trail becomes a narrow road that goes down to the village. The last portion is abrupt and we walk with great care.
We arrive to the school in Damuc, where we left the car. We are happy and it seems that the fatigue of almost 8 hours of walking barely makes its presence. The route is circular and spectacular. For this trail we recommend the presence of a guide.
