A touristic tour of one day around Targu Neamt, where the famous storyteller Ion Creanga lived and where Stephen the Great ruled, can be a real challenge for the tourist that wants to discover a small part of the beauties, traditions and culture of this part of Romania. To start this tour you can begin at Neamt Fortress, which is one of the strongest building of the medieval Moldavian state. The fortress is located on top of the “Culmea Plesului” Hill and it seems as it’s watching over Targu Neamt in a protective way.
The next stop, after having visited Neamt Fortress, is “Veronica Micle” Memorial House. Across the street you can visit the History and Ethnography Museum in Targu Neamt that is located in the former school where Ion Creanga and Vasile Conta learned.
When you leave Targu Neamț and head to Piatra Neamt, you have to stop at “Ion Creanga” Memorial House: it is the place where our greatest storyteller, Ion Creanga was born. From here on, go and discover the places that Ion Creanga talked about. Walk along River Ozana valley, follow the road DN 15 and you will reach “Dragos Voda” Bisons and Carpathian Reserve and then Neamt Monastery. The bison reserve is one of the greatest in Europe, exclusively dedicated to the conservation of bisons.
After visiting the bison reserve, you can go to Neamt Monastery, which is the oldest monastery from Moldavia. This place is also called “The Jerusalem of the Romanian Orthodocy” and it hosts the oldest library with thousands of monastic books.
Nearby Neamt Monastery, you can visit “Visarion Puiu” Memorial House and “Mihail Sadoveanu” Memorial Museum. Right beside the memorial house there is Vovidenia hermitage, also called “The Altar from the Peaceful Plane”.
