The Synagogue made of wood from Piatra Neamt
Address: str Dimitrie Ernici nr.7, Piatra Neamt, Neamt County
Built: 1766
The Synagogue of Wood from Piatra Neamt was built in 1766, to replace the old synagogue made of stone – this information was documented in 19 July 1776 in a royal decree from Grigore the III Ghica. The building is near the walls of the Royal Court and it’s not more than 300 m to an orthodox church. The building is so old that it existed there before Stefan the Great started to build the architectural complex called the Royal Court. The Jews at that time paid an amount of money per year because the synagogue was on royal ground.
The construction is made out of thick beams rapped in taban. The foundation is tall and made out of stone. The interior is formed by two floors in the north side and only one in the west side. In the south side there is an area for kids. In the east wall there is the Holy Urn, a true art piece made in 1835 by Saraga Itchok ben Moische in wood, organized in three floors that sit on columns covered in bronze and silver.
Here we can also see some heritage objects, such as a curtain with 7 triangles and an inscription in Hebrew from which results that is was built in 1767. The altar it’s 250 years old and covered in gold. The dome and the side walls are the original elements of this building.
